What Does Concentration Mean in Chemistry?

What Does Concentration Mean in Chemistry? When people ask me about the definition of concentration, I tell them it means that the student is able to focus and concentrate on the specific subject matter. Concentration is one of the first skills that students will learn in high school or college and something that most of us will have to deal with for many years of our lives. For example, if you are involved in football, concentration in football will determine whether you get drafted by the team that you are drafted by. Concentration is also the basis for deciding how you will play the sport and determine the proper way to play. The important thing to remember is that concentration is something that can be learned, it is not something that is hard to develop. In fact, the only real test for concentration is having the ability to dedicate yourself to it. A commitment to success does not just mean following directions and practicing every day, but it also means investing in yourself as a person and finding out how much you really want to excel at your chosen field.Think of it this way, how much value are you willing to give up to reach your goal? Can you give up the benefits that you get from the sport? Or can you decide that it is more important to play better than to play. Many teachers, when they teach their students, have them thinking in terms of a chemical approach to learning. This approach focuses on learning in terms of mechanics and chemistry to learn the real world application of a particular subject. The reality is that the importance of concentration has little to do with your experience as a student and more to do with how the teacher taught you to think. Concentration is an internalization of the concepts being taught, not an external application of the concepts. The key to successfully graduating from a chemistry course is to know how to think and how to focus. For example, concentration in chemistry can be about the discovery process, the analytical pa rt of it, or even simple math problems, all of which can be solved using critical thinking skills.

ISEE Prep Tips for Your Child

ISEE Prep Tips for Your Child If your student is thinking about taking the Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE), you may wonder how you can help him or her prepare. The ISEE, which is administered by the Educational Records Bureau, has three levels: Lower (grades 5 and 6), Middle (grades 7 and 8), and Upper (grades 9-12). Since the ISEE may seem lesser known than a test like the SAT, helping students achieve their best ISEE score may seem like an impossible task to parentsbut never fear! It is not. Some ISEE prep tips for your child include explaining the makeup of the exam and simulating the test day experience. For a more detailed guide on ISEE prep tips for your child, read on: Understand the ISEE structure To help your child prepare, you must first know that the test consists of five sections at all three levels. No matter your students age, he or she will be tested on Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Mathematics Achievement, and a 30-minute essay. Talk about ISEE test day with your child Students who have a solid plan of approach on test day may feel better prepared, so make sure your child knows what to expect. There are many questions your student might be wondering, such as: What do the rooms look like? What will I be asked to do? What is the timing of the test? Answering these basics will help ensure that your students mind is focused on the material the day of the test. You should also talk about basic, overall strategy with your child prior to test day. Encourage him or her to answer all questions, for instance, as wrong answers are not penalized, and think about answers before reading choices. Ensure your child has appropriate sleep and breakfast habits leading up to test day. The Educational Records Bureau offers a What to Expect on the ISEE guide, which can be a helpful place to begin answering questions as well. Review time management Remember that the ISEE assesses skills that typically develop over time for students, such as reading comprehension. While you can prepare for the ISEE, it is largely about strategy. Dont get discouragedand more importantly, dont let your child get discouraged. Instead of trying to cram five years worth of reading comprehension skills into five weeks, focus on developing solid testing skills. Pacing will be crucial for students, so take practice exams and discuss how long to spend on each type of question. Give your student all of the information about the difficulty of the test so he or she is not caught off guard, but also be careful not to pressure him or her. Teach your child anxiety-coping skills for the ISEE Perhaps the best thing you can do to prepare your child for the ISEE is to give him or her a way to overcome and deal with test anxiety. Knowing what will happen during the test and being able to manage time will certainly help this. Go a step further andidentify two or three strategies that can work to ease anxiety, both before the test and during it, and your student will likely approach the ISEE with more confidence. These strategies might include small meditations, exercise before the test, or practice of positive reinforcement. Find something that works for your child and consistently use it to overcome anxiety. The bottom line of ISEE prep Remember that the ISEE is a difficult test that many students struggle to prepare for. Focus on strategies to make the experience better for your student, and trust that the knowledge your child has (and is acquiring) will be comparable to his or her peers. Embrace ISEE practice tests and other test prep options that can help show your student what the test will be like. If your student does not score as well as hoped, take comfort in the fact that retaking the test is an option. Surround your student with positivity, build his or her confidence through knowledge, and review test-day coping strategies, and you will have left your student well-equipped for the ISEE. Kickboxing Equipment and Where to Buy It

Kickboxing Equipment and Where to Buy It Everything You Need to Go Kickboxing ChaptersWhat Style of Kickboxing Should I be Doing? What Do I Need to Go Kickboxing?Gear for General Fitness Training.Where Do I Buy My Kickboxing Gear?Maybe you have read our article on the health benefits of kickboxing and now think that you need this sport in your life. Maybe you have seen some of the kickboxing world champions on the TV and have been inspired. Or maybe your mate brought you along to a class and now you are hooked, obsessed, addicted.Either way, if you are going to be taking your new favourite sport seriously, you are going to have to think about some of the gear you are going to need. And, from protective gear to your clothes and training equipment, there is really a lot to think about. Kickboxing is one of the most dynamic of combat sports, remember â€" so you need to be prepared. As a casual kickboxer, your boxing training studio or gym will most likely supply most of the equipment for you. Yet, if you are going often, you don’t really want to be using for too long a boxing glove that’s been passed around a thousand people. And then think about sharing the boxing shoes, the ankle support, and â€" God forbid â€" the mouthguard. Let’s not actually think about that.Anyway, at some point, you are going to want to be buying your own training gear. Whilst it is an expense, it is just, simply easier. So, here are some of the key bits of boxing equipment that you are going to need in your kickboxing gear bags. And, at the bottom, we show you some of the best places to buy it all. Kickboxing, Muay Thai, and savate (French kickboxing) all have very different requirements, different levels of contact, and different conventions. So, it is worth being clear on which you will be doing before going ahead and buying the whole lot.For example, a lot of stuff is going to change if you are doing kickboxing in a cardio-fitness class rather than Muay Thai. In the former case, you aren’t going to need a mouth guard, because no-one really should be punching you in the face at all.Meanwhile, if you are going to into a Muay Thai competition, you will need to consider the obligatory fightwear that Muay Thai fighters wear. This is a convention that you don’t need to follow in your home gym â€" but is necessary when you are participating i n official bouts. So, think about all this quite clearly. You don’t want to end up with savate footwear when you simply don’t need it. And people might look at you a bit funny if you went into a kickboxing ring wearing Muay Thai rope hand wrap.Check out our article on the different types of kickboxing. You can't kickbox without the right gearWhat Do I Need to Go Kickboxing? But let’s get down to it. Here are some of the essential things you’ll need when you are kick boxing â€" both for protection and for fitness.Gloves.The iconic and essential boxing gear: the gloves. Lightweight MMA gloves or the rounded leather gloves, effective handwear is absolutely essential for all boxers â€" for the sake of your hands and for the sake of your opponent’s face. This stands for those using punching bags as well as those who are sparring. Don’t bother with bag gloves: whilst these are more lightweight â€" as they have less padding â€" if you ever want to level up to proper competitive bouts, you’ll need the real thing. Get them in fourteen- or sixteen-ounce sizes. You don’t need specific Muay Thai gloves: these sizes will do for sparring gloves and training gloves in both kickboxing and Muay Thai.Mitts.Mitts â€" or focus mitts â€" are the pads that, whilst training, will protect your pa rtner’s or coach’s hands from your punches. Whilst you won’t benefit from them yourself â€" unless you are swapping the puncher and the trainer â€" they are all-important. And they will make your training more effective.Whoever wears the mitts will call out combinations and return some pressure to your punch or kick.Hand Wraps. You’re wearing your kickboxing gloves. That’s all good. But when taking boxing very seriously â€" and doing it a lot â€" you may want to consider handwraps. These you wear beneath your gloves, and they provide compression, security, and stability to the muscles and tissue in your hands. They provide extra protection, essentially â€" and a harder hit to your opponent. In Muay Thai, you may have noticed that fighters wrap their hands in rope. Whilst different regions do this differently, the main aim is, again, protection. It will cover your hand and knuckles, give wrist support, and, sometimes, even extend to your elbow.Check out some of the world champ ions of kickboxing. The right kickboxing equipment is essentially for your own safety tooBody Armour: Shin Guards and Head Guards.Body armour sounds a little intimidating. But, remember, in kickboxing, you are fighting â€" and, in fights, people get hurt. The point in protective guards is to prevent more serious injury than is absolutely necessary. (In Muay Thai, the aim is to knock your opponent out, so injury to some extent is inevitable.) That’s why protection is usually used for particular pain points: the head and the shins.Your headgear will protect your temples and forehead, primarily. For styles like American kickboxing, in which low kicks are forbidden, you will expect kicks to the head â€" and it’s worth having something there between you and your skull.Meanwhile, in styles like savate, shinguards are fairly indispensable â€" as low kicks can go straight to an extremely painful area.Talking of extremely painful areas, guys, get a groin protector too.Mouth Guards.A must in your sparring gear , a mouthguard or gum shield will prevent a tinkling of teeth to the floor after a wallop in the mush. It’s fairly self-explanatory this one â€" but as important as all the rest.Remember, if you are not intending to do fights, then all of this stuff is superfluous. A punch bag won’t punch back.Foot Guards. In kickboxing, you’ll be striking your feet constantly. And, to ensure that you are protected from the force of your own strength, it is important that you take care to wear the correct foot protection.Kickboxing foot guards give support to your muscles, tendons, your little bones in your toes, and your ankles â€" and they won’t obstruct your footwork at all.If you are doing savate, you’ll need some special shoes for this style. There are quite strict rules from the presiding body, so it is important that you take care: no hard bits, no parts that can snag on an opponent’s clothes. In savate, the shoes are your main weapon, so make sure they are comfortable.Learn about t he kickboxing rules here!Clothing. When kickboxing, the chances are that you are going to get really hot and sweaty. So effective sports clothing is preferable â€" if not essential. You want clothes with some breathability â€" as well as boxing shorts that are not too baggy. Otherwise, they’ll just get in the way, and that’s not something you want. For beginners, decent sports gear will work well enough.Punch Bags.Whilst far from essential if you are going to training at the gym, a punching bag of your own is great if you want to bring your kickboxing training into your home.Whether they hang from the ceiling or they are freestanding, the punch bag is the indispensable piece of gear for your practice. Whether you are just boxing for your own general fitness or you are training actively towards a bout, a punchbag is the way that you will improve the quickest. Kickbox like a champion.Gear for General Fitness Training.Whilst we’ve listed the essentials, you’ll find that you’ll become a better kickboxer if you commit hard to your general fitness. This means cardio, weight training, and strength training â€" and there are plenty of tools you can use for this.Take the skipping rope, the famous exercise tool of the boxer. This will help you develop your agility, speed, and cardio.A kettlebell or a selection of dumbbells are handy for strength training too.Where Do I Buy My Kickboxing Gear? There are all sorts of places that sell kickboxing gear â€" from generic online marketplaces like Amazon to specialist local sports shops and your boxing gym. You’ll find specialist stores online too, like BoxFitUK, Geezers Boxing, Fight Outlet, and SugarRays. All of these places will provide you with all the equipment that you could possibly need.Look out for some of the best brands in the boxing and kickboxing market. Everlast is a classic, with some of the most famous names in the sport using their products. Otherwise, Twins make quality equipment and Blitz too. Finally, learn everything you need to get started in kickboxing!

4 Ways to Improve Your Problem-Solving Skills

4 Ways to Improve Your Problem-Solving Skills The ability to problem-solve is indispensable. As you move forward with your education, it will prove to be an invaluable asset not only as you study for entrance exams and unit tests, but also in college and beyond, when you launch your career. When you set out to solve a problem, you are essentially defining a question in need of a solution. Whether you solve that problem ultimately depends upon your ability to ask the right question and to take the necessary steps to find the most sensible solution. Of course, problem-solving is not always straightforward. Often, it requires a great deal of insight and critical thinking to imagine possible solutions, while it takes creativity and decisiveness to implement the best solution. Learning when and how to employ these qualities involves discretion, but acquiring such skills can also be the key difference between acing and flunking an exam. Here are four ways to improve your problem-solving skills: 1. Learn how to identify the problem On tests, a significant amount of time is wasted when a student is unsure what the problem is about. Occasionally, the source of an incorrect answer is rooted not in misinformation, but rather in misunderstanding. When preparing to solve a problem, ensure you are certain of two things: its scope (what is the question truly asking?) and its limits (what is the question not asking?). You can then move on to defining the problem. Here are some great tips to help you identify your study style. One way to define a problem is to rephrase the question. If you are dealing with a word problem whose sentences are long and convoluted, it may be helpful to break it into shorter, clearer portions. It may also be useful to mentally rearrange the word order so it makes sense to you. If you choose to do so, take care to avoid losing the original meaning. Correctly identifying a problem takes reading comprehension. To sharpen your reading comprehension skills, practice asking yourself questions when you read like, Can I summarize this paragraph in two sentences? 2. Draw connections Once you have determined the correct question, you can then find the right answer. This can be a multi-step process. For instance, on a math test, you may encounter a complex problem that you have never encountered before. Instead of skipping it, assess whether there is any part of the question that resembles a math problem you have solved in the past. Break it into simpler steps, then think each through. Math is more than just memorizing formulas and functions and making calculationsmuch of math depends upon numerical reasoning and logic. As a result, to improve your problem-solving skills, sharpen your reasoning skills. You may be surprised by the results. 3. Develop good habits To master any skill, you must first practice. Practice independently or with a mentor, like a tutor. Challenge yourself to practice problems in an area that is difficult for you. Here are a few of the best study habitsfor students. If solving antonym/synonym questions is simple, see if you can answer reading questions just as quickly. Or if algebra is your strong suit, perhaps you should devote more time to geometry. Solving such problems over and over again will help you strengthen pathways in your brain so you can do them again laterthis time, more quickly.Complete practice tests. Complete problem-solving exercises. Time yourself to see if you improve. Eventually, logical solutions will present themselves more readily to you, until solving problems feels like second nature. 4. Fuel your brain power Your brain is like an engine. It is powerful, quick, and it can go far. However, without proper fuel, it will not function well. Do not underestimate the value of a good nights sleep and eating well. Your brain and your body go hand-in-hand. To perform at your best mentally, you also need to take care of yourself physically. You may be surprised to learn that problem-solving skills depend on logical reasoning. The rational thinking that is required to solve problems involves a mentality that can be applied to many different scenarios. Strengthen your ability to think clearly and to identify strategies. In the end, you will have a skill set that is not only vital, but will also point you to real solutions.

How to Prepare for Your Med School Admissions Interview Part 5

How to Prepare for Your Med School Admissions Interview Part 5 By Michelle Finkel, MD Insider Medical Admissions The following piece was written byDr. Michelle Finkel. Michelle has been featured in ourAdmissions Expert seriesand is a former Harvard Medical School faculty member. She is the founder ofInsider Medical Admissions. In my last several guest posts on the Varsity Tutors Blog, Ive covered both prominent and subtle aspects of the interview day. Check out my July entry for advice on how to let your story show your glory and how to fake it until you make it, and my August entry emphasizing that you can run; you can hide; but you cant escape the weaknesses in your application. Septembers piece reviewed geographical issues how to ensure you persuade programs that you are willing to relocate to a substantially different location (you can check out anytime; but you can never leave) and solid strategies for demonstrating interest in schools thats amore. Finally, Octobers entry included advice on how to tactfully navigate interview day social events shiny happy people holding hands and how to manage illegal questions with poise youve got to hide your love away. As weve seen through those entries, the medical school interview day itself is complicated and imposing, and managing it graciously is critical. But many applicants give short shrift to creating a solid post-game strategy, work thats also essential to avoid missteps. In todays entry, well cover those often-overlooked points. Unforgettable After the interview day ends, you should take a moment to put your feet up and congratulate yourself for getting through the inconvenient travel, small talk with strangers, and ability to appear fresh and pleasant when youre really quite exhausted. Then, after youve taken a few deep breaths, you should take out your pen and paper and get started on your thank you notes. Two years ago, a medical school applicant wrote me to say that the Dean of the school at which she had recently interviewed called her to tell her that he was impressed with her candidacy and the hand-written thank you note she had sent. The client thanked me for my help with her application and for the thank you note tip. (As you might have guessed, she was admitted to that med school.) Writing a thank you note after a medical school interview is low-hanging fruit: Its an easy-to-perform courtesy with high impact for minimal effort that is frequently overlooked by otherwise competitive applicants. Its worth the few dollars at your local superstore and the three minutes apiece. But what should the letter contain, to whom should it be sent, and is email or snail mail the best method for delivery? First, the letter should be brief and clear. Thank the faculty member for the invitation to interview and ensure you point out that you would make a great contribution to the school if accepted. If you discussed a particular topic with the faculty member that would be appropriate for the note, you can include it. A brief but thoughtful thank you note can be only a few lines long and still make a positive impression. The flip side is that a flowery or inappropriately casual letter can leave the impression that you have the insincerity of a beauty pageant contestant or that you are overconfident mistaken perceptions that the recipient may rely on when she nixes your candidacy at the admissions committee meeting. Second, I recommend writing more letters rather than fewer, meaning that if you think you should write a letter, do it. Heres a tip: If you spent more than five minutes with someone one-on-one, consider writing him/her a thank you note. (Also write notes to those faculty members who participated in any group interview you had.) A brief and considered thank you note won't hurt and might help, so be generous with them. Finally, send your thank you notes through snail mail. (If you also want to email a note, that is fine as a supplement, but it should not replace a hand-written note.) The reasons are several-fold: First, email may be viewed as lazy. Hand-written thank you notes take more time, which shows. Second, its easy to delete, archive, or ignore an email. Also, to put an email thank you note in a hard file, the receiver needs to take the time to print out your email. You dont want any barriers between you and your good impression. I do recommend getting those handwritten thank you notes in quickly. The night after youve completed your interview or the next day is a good time to write and send. In addition to thank you notes, another tactic is writing a letter of intent. These optional updates to schools can confirm your interest, while showcasing old and new aspects of your candidacy. Programs often seek not just top recruits, but recruits who are genuinely grateful to be at their specific institutions, and sending a supplemental letter demonstrates that sentiment. If you plan to write a letter of interest, though, ensure you affirm your strong interest in the institution while keeping your writing brief. (I strongly advise one page maximum.) Also, make sure you distinguish yourself with your accomplishments: In editing letters of intent, I note that applicants often make the mistake of focusing on their desired institution's virtues. These programs already know their strengths; unfortunately, you won't further your candidacy by reiterating them. In my next blog, well discuss how to manage some sticky interview situations.
